Why most home networks suck

It's not your fault — the default setup was never designed for how you actually use your network.

Dead zones everywhere

The basement, the garage, the back bedroom — there's always a spot where Wi-Fi just doesn't reach. One router in the corner of your house was never going to cut it.

Constant rebooting

When "restart the router" is your go-to fix, something's wrong. Devices dropping off, buffering during calls, speeds that don't match what you're paying for.

ISP hardware you're stuck with

The combo box your provider installed tries to be a router, a switch, and a Wi-Fi access point all at once. It's not great at any of them.

Services

Everything you need to replace that ISP box with a network that actually works.

Structured Cabling

Ethernet runs, patch panels, and wall jacks — the wired backbone that gives your Wi-Fi something solid to build on.

Wi-Fi Access Points

Proper access points placed where they need to be for full coverage. No more dead zones, no more range extenders.

Network Segmentation

Separate networks for your smart home devices, guest access, and personal devices — so they're not all mixed together.

Camera Systems

Security cameras with local storage. View remotely when you need to, no monthly cloud subscription required.

Firewalls & Switches

Dedicated hardware for routing and switching — replacing the all-in-one box your ISP gave you with gear that actually performs.

Ongoing Support

Optional remote monitoring, firmware updates, and tweaks as your setup evolves. I don't disappear after install.

Who's behind this

Greg Knoblauch

I'm Greg — a software engineer by day, network nerd by choice. I've spent over 8 years building backend systems and cloud infrastructure professionally, and somewhere along the way I started applying that same mindset to home networks.

It started with my own place — I wanted proper coverage, segmented devices, local camera storage, and gear that didn't phone home to some manufacturer's cloud. Once I had it dialled in, friends and neighbours started asking for the same thing.

ProperNet is how I turn that into a service. I design and install networks using the same enterprise-grade hardware and practices I'd use in a professional environment — just scaled for homes, offices, and small businesses in Edmonton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work with existing homes, or only new builds?
Both. New builds are ideal for running cables during construction, but most of my work is retrofitting existing homes with minimal disruption.
How long does a typical installation take?
Most residential installs take 1–2 days depending on the scope. A simple Wi-Fi upgrade might be a few hours; a full structured cabling job in a larger home could take longer.
What brands and equipment do you use?
I work with professional-grade equipment from brands like UniFi, TP-Link Omada, MikroTik, and others — chosen based on your needs and budget, not vendor lock-in.
How much does it cost?
Every home is different. A consultation is free, and I'll provide a detailed quote based on your specific setup. Most projects range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on scope.
Do you offer warranties or ongoing support?
All hardware comes with manufacturer warranties. I also offer optional ongoing support for remote monitoring, firmware updates, and configuration changes.
Will this work with my current internet provider?
Yes. The network infrastructure I install works with any ISP. You keep your internet plan — I replace the hardware that manages it inside your home.
